FlashForward: The Kangaroo Theory

Disclaimer: I’m just gonna try and have fun with this one folks.

Although it seems like a bit of a stretch, the Kangaroo Theory of FlashForward may have some merit to it. So why the Kangaroo in the first episode of FlashForward? What was it doing there, besides hopping around of course? Was it there for no apparent reason? I don’t think the directors of the show would go through all the trouble of filming a kangaroo if it wasn’t an important part of the plot, or at least tied into it somehow.

This may seem like a highly unlikely connection, but its a connection nevertheless.

In 1995 (make note of the date), a Portuguese novelist by the name of José Saramago, published a novel entitled “Blindness”, which was recently remade into a movie directed by Fernando Meirelles, starring Mark Ruffalo and Julianne Moore.

The movie is a pretty good adaptation of the novel, which follows the story of an unexplained mass blindness epidemic. This virus suddenly spreads from one person to the next, without any good explanation, until pretty soon, the entire world goes blind. However one person remains unaffected by the epidemic and witnesses the atrocities and the hysteria that fallows.

So what does this have to do with our Kangaroo in FlashForward? After deciding to do a little research on Kangaroos, by research I mean typing in “kangaroo” into Wikipedia, I found an interesting excerpt, an omen perhaps. In 1994 (take note of the date), the first official report of kangaroo blindness was filed in central New South Wales. During the following year, Victoria and South Australia reported the same kangaroo blindness. By 1996, this “disease” spread across the desert to Western Australia, moreover, officials were concerned that this epidemic could possibly spread to livestock and even humans.

for some reason i’m thinking FlashForward is another parallel/tangent universe story

the visions they saw were glimpses into another universe

why the heck are there all these multiverse stories on TV and in movies?

You might be right Greg, its definitely a possibility they are seeing glimpses into another dimension, I just hope the writers came up with an original enough idea so the show doesn’t look too much like “Fringe”.

Yeah, its weird how all of these multiverses and CERN have become popular themes in todays novels, movies, and TV shows, and media in general. Perhaps the writers are following the fad and capitalizing on its popularity, or maybe there are other reasons….something to do with 2012, perhaps they are preparing us for something…

we were wondering if your earlier post would jive with the notion of the theoretical pole shift in 2012

Yes, there seems to be a lot of speculation about a theoretical pole shift and 2012, although I think a geomagnetic reversal is more likely.

My degree in geology (which I obtained 30 years ago) referenced several geomagnetic reversal events throughout geologic time. I don’t recall any of these reversals being tied to cataclysmic events. While geomagnetic reversals may be a fertile topic for writers, I hope the story is not based on it.

oh and i agree, i hope FF is NOT yet another alternate reality but with what we’ve seen so far it seems like a possible logical theory

It seems that they are tending to multiverses theories, but as you said, I hope it doesn’t really turn this way… We already have Lost and Fringe that talks a lot about it.

About 2012, maybe they are trying to show us something, but for what reason would they do that?

    • Marat Gaziev said, on October 11, 2009 at 5:54 pm

Yes, Fringe seems to have the multiverse theme in the bag, I don’t imagine the writers of FF will want to make their show very similar.

2012 is a very sensitive topic, if some change was to happen, how do you prepare the public without causing mass panic… television shows, books, movies, etc, are the perfect medium of gradual information dissemination.

Well the kangaroo theory may be onto something , hard to nail it this early into the show…if this is a LOST style show , it may be months before the “kangaroo” connection is revealed..but the research iis true as im in Australia and had to shoot many roos on my property at that time of outbreak…

here is a link to the writers explanation of the use of the kangaroo, thought you might enjoy this.

The Kangaroo was sent through alternative dimensions as a test subject..

Anyone came across theories of a tear in space/time when the experiment was done?.

But no other animals was shown to be out of place other than the kangaroo. Another theory would be teleportation.

Great theory yet again, very hard to tell if its indeed true or not. However it makes you wonder about the possibilities. Quite alarming about the kangaroos in Australia. Can’t believe that this epidemic was in fact real.
